Pumpernick's Bagel Bakery
About This Spot
Stepping into Pumpernick's Bagel Bakery, you immediately feel embraced by a warm, inviting atmosphere that eases you into a slower, more thoughtful pace. Nestled on Shenley Road in Borehamwood, this cozy café feels like a cherished local pause—a place where friendly smiles and genuine care are as much a part of the experience as the food itself. It’s the sort of spot where mornings naturally stretch out, and the hum of quiet conversation mingles with the clink of coffee cups.
The scent of freshly baked bread weaves through the air, inviting you to savor creations that strike a balance between comfort and freshness. Whether it’s the silky cream cheese paired with smoked salmon in a perfectly doughy bagel or the comforting warmth of eggs enjoyed in a uniquely crafted bageldict, each bite reflects a thoughtful approach to classic flavors. The menu extends beyond bagels, offering twists like smashed avocado and hearty lentil soups that speak to seasonal rhythms and a little culinary curiosity.
Here, coffee isn’t just a morning ritual but part of a cherished routine. The baristas craft each cappuccino and cortado with care, serving them alongside homemade apple strudel or a vibrant fresh fruit smoothie. It’s a place where time feels generous and the rhythm of the day aligns with moments of simple pleasure.
The pace of service matches this welcoming mood—unhurried, personable, and attentive. 'We recommend Pumpernick's highly. They provided our platters on the same day that we called. They were all beautifully presented, very fresh and very tasty. They were enjoyed by all our guests. We had traditional fillings in our beigel, bridge roll, and sandwich platters, as well as a nice vegan choice and fish balls. We'll certainly use Pumpernick's again.'

I don’t normally go for kosher breakfasts but I decided to give Pumpernick’s a try and I’m genuinely glad I did. The ladies working there are always friendly and welcoming and it makes a big difference. I’ve now been in on a few different mornings and the service has been consistently warm each time. On my first visit I had the Greek Breakfast and it was very good. The pita was the standout. Warm, soft and properly grilled and genuinely on the same level as the pita you get in Israel. I’ve eaten a lot of breakfasts there so I know what good pita should be like. The eggs were fried perfectly with runny yolks and no grease, the halloumi was nicely browned and the salad and olives were fresh. The whole plate works really well because you can open the pita and load everything into it. Since then I’ve also tried the Tel Aviv Breakfast with the omelette and that was excellent as well. The quality has been completely consistent every time I’ve gone in. Everything tastes fresh, cooked properly and put together with care. They bring in fresh bread in the mornings including very good challah and the pastry counter is great. Rugelach, sweet cheese pastries, bagels and other bakery items you don’t see in most cafés. I’ve taken pastries with me after breakfast and they’ve all been really good. The rugelach is properly chocolaty and the sweet cheese pastry is perfect to eat on the go. My order on the first day was £19.40 for breakfast, coffee and two pastries which is great value for a kosher place on Shenley Road. Overall I’d now call it a solid 9 out of 10. The food is consistently excellent, the service is friendly and the fresh bread and pastries really set it apart.
